students.

Texas has approved a statewide reading list that will make Bible passages required reading for millions of public school students.

The decision is being presented as a fight over literature, history, and classroom standards. But it lands inside a much larger political project. Texas is not introducing Christian scripture into public schools in a vacuum. It is doing so in a state where the same political infrastructure has already targeted trans students, immigrant families, racial history, public-school content, and the boundaries between church and state.

The Texas State Board of Education approved the required reading list in a 9–5 vote. The list applies to more than 5 million public school students and is scheduled to begin phasing in during the 2030–2031 school year. It includes Bible stories and passages alongside other required texts, making Texas one of the most aggressive state experiments in compulsory religious content in public education.

Supporters have argued that Judeo-Christian texts are historically significant and should be represented in classroom instruction. Critics have warned that the policy gives preference to Christianity, threatens church-state separation, and places one religious framework inside a public school system that serves children of many faiths and no faith.

The constitutional debate matters. But the public harm does not stop there.

The deeper issue is power. A state can say it is assigning scripture as literature while also using its schools to define whose values count as civic knowledge. Once a state requires children to read Christian texts as part of public education, the question becomes which children are expected to see themselves inside that moral framework and which children are expected to be corrected by it.

For trans students, that question is not abstract. Texas has pursued laws and policies restricting how schools discuss race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and identity-based inclusion. Across the country, Christian doctrine has also been used to justify bathroom bans, restrictions on gender-affirming care, book removals, pronoun fights, and policies that treat trans youth as problems to be managed instead of students to be protected.

When the same political movement advances those policies and then insists that Christian texts belong at the center of public instruction, vulnerable students have reason to hear more than a literary argument. They hear the state choosing a moral language that has already been used against them.

For immigrant students and families, the contradiction is also visible. Texas politics has repeatedly framed immigrant communities through enforcement, suspicion, border fear, and exclusion. The same political culture now asks public schools to elevate religious texts that include teachings about mercy, welcome, and loving one’s neighbor.

The problem is not that students may encounter the Bible as literature. Public schools can teach religious texts in appropriate historical, literary, or comparative contexts. The problem is compulsory state selection in a political environment where Christianity is not being treated as one tradition among many, but as the preferred moral language of public life.

Texas has already pursued a law requiring Ten Commandments displays in public school classrooms. That law has been challenged in federal court, with enforcement blocked in some districts at points while state officials pushed for compliance elsewhere. The reading-list approval now extends the same pressure into curriculum: not only what hangs on the wall, but what children are required to read.

The state’s public schools are also not demographically aligned with the narrow cultural vision being elevated. Texas public schools educate millions of children, and reporting on the new list has noted criticism that the selections lean heavily on older works, many by white male authors, in a state where Latino and Black students make up a majority of public-school enrollment.

That does not mean every old text is harmful. It means required reading lists are never neutral. They tell children what a state believes is essential, worthy, civilizing, and authoritative.

When a state with Texas’ political record chooses Bible passages as mandatory public-school reading, the choice carries the weight of that record. It follows years of fights over race, gender, sexuality, immigration, censorship, parental control, and the meaning of public education itself.

The classroom becomes the place where political power turns itself into common sense. The state does not only pass bans or restrictions. It builds curriculum. It chooses texts. It defines heritage. It tells students which stories belong to the center and which stories can be treated as optional, controversial, or dangerous.

For vulnerable children, that distinction is material. A trans child sitting in a Texas classroom may already know that state leaders have debated their body, their name, their bathroom, their healthcare, and their place in school. An immigrant child may already know that the same state speaks about families like theirs through the language of border control and criminalization. A non-Christian child may already know that the classroom is supposed to belong to everyone, not only to the faith tradition most favored by the state.

Compulsory Bible reading enters that room with all of that already present.

The hypocrisy is not hidden. Christian scripture includes commands to love one’s neighbor, care for the stranger, protect the vulnerable, and show mercy. But those teachings are not what define the state’s treatment of many of the children most likely to be harmed by its politics. The state is not asking whether its policies reflect those teachings. It is asking children to accept the texts while adults in power continue to build systems that punish the neighbors those texts claim should be loved.

The issue is not only religion in schools; it is the use of public education to launder political cruelty through moral language.

Texas officials and supporters can describe the Bible passages as heritage, literacy, or historical context. But public schools are not private churches, and children are not an audience captured for state-backed religious formation. A classroom serving millions of students should not be used to elevate one religious tradition while the state’s politics continue to mark trans students, immigrant families, non-Christian children, and students of color as problems to be governed.

The reading list is scheduled years in advance, but the signal is immediate. Texas is telling the country that public education can be used to normalize Christian authority at scale.

The consequences extend far beyond Texas. The state educates roughly one in ten public school students in the United States. Its curriculum decisions influence textbooks, publishers, political copycats, and national debates over what children are allowed to learn.

The question is not whether the Bible can ever be studied in public school. The question is why a state already targeting vulnerable children is so determined to make Christian scripture compulsory.

Public education should protect students, not turn classrooms into testing grounds for state-backed religious politics.

Support RESIST | FIGHT’s work documenting how power moves through schools, courts, agencies, and public Health officials in Gaza say Israeli attacks and gunfire have continued killing Palestinians, even as the ceasefire is publicly described as a pause in the war.

Gaza’s wider death toll has now passed 73,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023, according to Gaza health officials. The ministry’s figures do not separate civilians from combatants, but international agencies and major news organizations have continued using the data as the main public record of Palestinian deaths in Gaza.

The confirmed toll may still understate the scale of death. A study published in The Lancet Global Health estimated 75,200 violent deaths in Gaza during the first 16 months of the war alone, higher than the official count available for that same period. Women, children, and older people made up more than half of the violent deaths estimated in that study.

That matters because the official number is often treated as the ceiling when it may be the floor. Gaza’s dead include Palestinians killed directly by Israeli fire, but the public record has also struggled to capture the bodies still under rubble, the deaths that come after the attack, and the full human cost of destroyed hospitals, displacement, hunger, and repeated bombardment.

A ceasefire that leaves Palestinians still being killed by Israeli fire is not peace for the people living under it. It is another chapter in the record of a war whose death toll keeps rising while Gaza’s survivors are left to count the dead.

Upgrade to a paid subscription to support independent public-record reporting on state violence, Palestinian death, war, grief, and the human cost of power.

Upgrade

Three Women Charged After 7-Year-Old Jor’Dynn Duncan Died With Roughly 90 Injuries

Suffolk County prosecutors say Jor’Dynn Duncan suffered months of alleged abuse before dying from an untreated infection tied to sharp-force injuries.

RAW NEWS • MEDIA

BAYPORT, New York — Three women from the same Long Island family have been charged after prosecutors said 7-year-old Jor’Dynn Duncan died with roughly 90 injuries on her body following months of alleged abuse inside a Bayport home.

Jor’Dynn was taken to a hospital unconscious on Dec. 29, 2025, and was pronounced dead. convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Schiff Accuses Lutnick of Lying

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) accused Lutnick in a statement Monday of having “lied” about the extent of his connection to Epstein. Lutnick has sought to downplay their relationship, saying in a podcast appearance last year he vowed in 2005 to never again be in the same room as Epstein.

Justice Department Records Suggest Continued Contact

But files recently released by the Justice Department suggest he continued his interactions with Epstein, including planning a visit several years later to Epstein’s Caribbean island.

Calls for Immediate Resignation

“Lutnick’s lies about his business dealings with a convicted child sex offender raise serious concerns about his judgement and ethics,” Schiff said. “Lutnick has no business being our Commerce Secretary, and he should resign immediately.”

Share

White House Response

Asked about the scrunity, White House spokesperson Kush Desai did not respond directly but said President Donald Trump “has assembled the best and most transformative cabinet in modern history.”

“The entire Trump administration, including Secretary Lutnick and the Department of Commerce, remains focused on delivering for the American people,” he said.

Oversight Committee Weighs Next Steps

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), who is leading an investigation into Epstein and has already subpoenaed multiple associates, did not rule out issuing one for Lutnick. But he said the panel’s outstanding subpoenas take priority for now.

“We’re interested in talking to anyone that might have any information that would help us get justice for the survivorship,” he told reporters Monday.

Resignation Demands Cross Party Lines

Schiff is joining a bipartisan chorus of House members who have called in recent days for Lutnick to either resign or be fired — neither of which appears to be on the precipice of happening.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) told CNN during an interview that aired over the weekend that Lutnick should “make life easier on the president, frankly, and just resign.” House Democrats, including top Oversight Committee member Robert Garcia, have also called on Lutnick to go.

“It’s now clear that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has been lying about his relationship with Epstein,” the Californian posted on X. “Lutnick must resign or be fired. The real risk is what happens when a failed system is allowed to operate inside an enforcement machine that does not require accuracy to function.

This is not a problem limited to immigrants or border communities. Once facial-recognition tools are embedded into ICE encounters, every American becomes vulnerable to their errors.

When a Machine Gets It Wrong, People Pay the Price

A misidentification is not a harmless glitch. In the context of ICE enforcement, it can mean detention, separation from family, loss of work, and weeks or months spent inside a system designed to move slowly when correcting its own mistakes.

Facial-recognition systems don’t merely “assist” officers. They shape suspicion, escalation, and outcomes before a person ever has the chance to speak for themselves. Once flagged, an individual must prove their identity against a machine — and against an agency that treats the system’s output as presumptively correct.

The faster the technology moves, the harder it becomes for reality to catch up.

METAL INK is a reader-supported publication. Small differences — head tilt, lighting, shadow, motion blur, cropping, focus, or facial expression — can materially alter how a face is translated into a biometric template. When images are taken outside controlled environments, those inconsistencies reshuffle candidate matches and raise the likelihood of error.

To meet demands for real-time responses, systems often narrow the pool of potential matches. Speed is achieved by sacrificing certainty. That trade-off is not accidental — it is built into the design.

In other words, the quicker the identification, the higher the risk the system gets it wrong.

Mobile Fortify Was Deployed for Enforcement, Not Accuracy

Despite these known limitations, the Department of Homeland Security launched Mobile Fortify in the spring of 2025. The app was designed to “determine or verify” identities during stops or detentions conducted by DHS officers in the field — not in controlled settings, not through careful review, but during active enforcement operations in towns and cities across the United States.

Records show the rollout was explicitly linked to an executive order signed by Donald Trump on his first day in office, calling for a “total and efficient” crackdown on undocumented immigrants. That order emphasized expedited removals, expanded detention capacity, and financial pressure on states to comply.

Efficiency was the priority. Precision was not.

Deployed Without the Safeguards Privacy Requires

Mobile Fortify is now used by immigration agents in everyday public spaces, yet it was never designed to reliably identify people on the street. More troubling, it was deployed without the scrutiny that has historically governed technologies with profound implications for privacy and civil liberties.

There was no meaningful public consent. No independent validation of accuracy under real-world conditions. No external oversight proportional to the power being granted.

The result is a system that treats uncertainty as acceptable collateral — even though the consequences of being wrong can include detention, separation, and prolonged loss of liberty.

Automated Enforcement Breaks Due Process by Design

These tools were marketed as efficiency upgrades. What they actually automate is authority.

A false match can escalate an encounter instantly. And once a person is routed into ICE detention, due process becomes an obstacle rather than a guarantee. The burden flips: the individual must undo the damage caused by a system already known to be unreliable.

This is not theoretical. It is already happening.

And when the system misidentifies people, citizenship does not provide immunity — only delay.

ICE Detention Is Not Neutral. It Is Profitable.

The danger is magnified by the structure of ICE detention itself. Large portions of the detention network are operated by private, for-profit corporations. Full beds generate revenue. Delays generate money.

In a profit-driven detention system, a false positive is not treated as an emergency. It becomes intake. Processing. Contract fulfillment.

When the system is wrong, it does not lose money.

It loses money when people are released.

That incentive structure matters when flawed surveillance technology feeds directly into detention pipelines. A misidentified American citizen is not immediately “corrected.” They are processed.

A Failed Surveillance Tool Inside a Profitable System Is a Public Threat

This is why unsafe facial-recognition technology is not merely a civil-liberties issue or an immigration issue. It is a national risk.

Any system that:

misidentifies people,

funnels them into detention,

lacks immediate external oversight,

and operates within a profit-based enforcement structure

creates conditions where innocent people can disappear into bureaucracy for weeks or months.

Once normalized, the question stops being “Who is this for?”

It becomes “Who is safe from it?”

Power That Moves Faster Than Correction Is the Real Danger

The most dangerous feature of this system isn’t malice — it’s momentum.

Contracts are signed. Tools are integrated. Procedures are built around them. Even after flaws are documented, removal becomes “impractical.” The machinery keeps turning, and the cost of being wrong is externalized onto individuals.

At that point, accuracy is no longer required for harm to occur.

Only authority is.

When surveillance power cannot be withdrawn — even after it is exposed as unsafe — the harm is no longer accidental.

It is structural.

Share METAL INK

ICE Kidnapped a Minnesota 10-Year-Old, Locked Her in a Texas Detention Camp for a Month — And This Is Policy

That outcome required planning, coordination, paperwork, approval, transport, and custody transfer.

Every step was intentional.

Subscribe now

A Child Treated as Contraband

The girl was not accused of a crime. She was not a threat. She was not hiding.

She was a child.

Yet ICE treated her as cargo — processed, moved, stored — under a system that reduces human beings to case numbers and bed counts. The distance was not incidental. Sending detainees far from home is a known tactic: it isolates families, delays legal intervention, and weakens public attention.

This is not enforcement.

It is disappearance through bureaucracy.

Detention Camps Are Designed to Break Visibility

Texas detention facilities are repeatedly used for one reason: control.

They are far from northern states.

They are hostile to outside inspection.

They are shielded from rapid congressional or media access.

When children are placed there, it becomes exponentially harder for lawyers, doctors, educators, or advocates to intervene quickly.

That is not an accident.

That is the function.

This Is Happening to Other Children

The Minnesota child is not an outlier. She is simply visible — because someone fought hard enough to make her visible.

Children are routinely:

Transported across state lines without family consent

Held without adequate medical or mental-health care

Denied access to legal counsel

Warehoused in facilities with documented disease outbreaks

Treated as immigration “cases” rather than human beings

The public only hears about the cases that slip through the silence.

Oversight Is Being Blocked on Purpose

When lawmakers attempt to inspect these facilities, they are frequently denied entry.

When journalists ask questions, ICE cites “operational security.”

When families demand answers, they are met with delays, redactions, and silence.

This is not transparency failing.

This is opacity being enforced.

Policy Violence Is Still Violence

No one needs to lay hands on a child for harm to occur.

Dragging a child out of her community.

Locking her in a distant camp.

Subjecting her to fear, uncertainty, and isolation.

That is violence — administered through policy, paperwork, and uniformed authority.

And because it is legal, it is normalized.

This Is the Line

A society is defined by what it permits to happen to children.

If a ten-year-old can be taken, transported across the country, detained for a month, and returned only after public pressure — then the system is not “broken.”

It is functioning as intended.

The question is no longer whether this is happening.

The question is how long it will be tolerated.

The question is no longer whether this is happening.

The question is how long it will be tolerated.

Support The Record

Metal Ink exists to document what power wants erased.

If this reporting matters to you, support the work that preserves the record, tracks patterns, and refuses to let these stories disappear.

Accountability begins with documentation..

Share

Congressional Fight Over ICE Accountability

A Budget Deadline Turns Into a Power Struggle

RAW NEWS • MEDIA

As the deadline to fund the Department of Homeland Security approaches, Congress is facing a high-stakes confrontation that has put ICE accountability at the center of the budget battle.

Democratic lawmakers are threatening to block DHS funding unless enforceable limits are placed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some GOP leaders are attempting to counter by tying immigration funding to unrelated policy demands, escalating the standoff as the shutdown clock ticks down.

Why This Fight Is Different

What separates this moment from past DHS funding battles is the framing. This is not a debate about immigration numbers or border rhetoric. It is a debate over whether a federal law-enforcement agency can continue operating with broad discretion and minimal accountability.

The Human Cost Driving Scrutiny

Recent incidents, court challenges, and sworn testimony have intensified scrutiny of ICE’s tactics — particularly in cases involving medical neglect, warrantless detentions, and use of force against civilians.

For affected communities, the consequences are immediate and personal, not abstract policy disputes.

Budgets as Leverage

By tying funding to oversight, Congress is signaling that enforcement power is no longer untouchable. Budgets are leverage.

For the first time in years, ICE is being forced into a public reckoning over how it operates and who it answers to.

What Happens Next

Whether these conditions survive negotiations or are stripped away behind closed doors, the fight itself marks a shift. Accountability has entered the funding process.

The outcome will shape the future of immigration enforcement far beyond this budget cycle.

Accountability only exists if the record survives.

Support Metal Ink 🧷

Metal Ink documents harm, preserves the public record, and tracks accountability where institutions refuse to act.

Contributions sustain documentation, archiving, and long-term accountability tracking.

Fund Documentation

Independent documentation exists because of public support.

Accountability is debated constantly, but rarely defined in practice.

Share

Sascha Riley, Verification, and the Work of Accountability

What can be verified, what remains unproven, and why accountability still matters

RAW NEWS • MEDIA

Trigger warning: This article references child abuse and sexual violence.

Metal Ink exists to document harm, preserve public record, and pursue accountability without spectacle. It is a system operating as designed — one that depends on confusion, fatigue, and silence to keep functioning.

In recent days, the public has been confronted with images and fragments: the killing of Renee Good, the death of Alex Pretti, ICE raids unfolding like occupations, escalating anti-trans policies, and the resurfacing of long-buried Epstein records. Each story appears briefly, provokes outrage, and then is replaced by the next crisis. The churn is intentional. When events are experienced only as moments, accountability never forms.

Metal Ink exists to interrupt that pattern.

Subscribe now

Renee Good’s death was not an anomaly. It sits within a broader environment where state power is increasingly exercised without restraint, particularly against those already deemed disposable. Alex Pretti’s death did not occur in a vacuum either; it unfolded in a climate where force is normalized, oversight is hollowed out, and the burden of proof is quietly shifted onto the victims. These are not failures of the system — they are outcomes.

The same logic underpins ICE’s current operations. Raids framed as “enforcement” function instead as intimidation, dislocation, and spectacle. Communities are destabilized not only by arrests, but by the uncertainty that follows: Who is next? Who is safe? Who will be believed? When legality becomes opaque, fear becomes policy.

At the same time, restrictive anti-trans legislation advances under the language of protection and order. These policies are not about safety; they are about control. They rely on erasure — of trans lives, of lived consequences, of the harm they produce — while presenting themselves as neutral governance.

And beneath all of this lies a familiar pattern: powerful figures insulated from consequence. The Epstein files are not merely historical scandal; they are a reminder of how long institutions can protect harm when exposure is inconvenient. Silence, delay, and procedural fog are tools as effective as force.

Metal Ink is not here to amplify outrage. It is here to preserve the record.

This platform documents connections — between violence and policy, between rhetoric and outcome, between what is said and what is done. It holds events in continuity rather than isolation. It exists for those who cannot be on the streets, who cannot shout over the noise, but who understand that bearing witness is itself an act of resistance.

Participation does not require performance. Reading is participation. Sharing is participation. Supporting this work ensures that these events do not dissolve into the algorithmic void where accountability goes to die.

Silence is not neutral. It is structural.

Metal Ink exists to break it.

Support This Work

Metal Ink is an independent documentation and accountability platform.

This work takes time, labor, and resources.

If you want these records preserved, investigated, and kept public — fund it.

Your support pays for:

Ongoing investigation and documentation

Public records preservation

Reporting that does not disappear when the news cycle moves on

DONATE

No dilution.

Just impact.
