A 20-year-old Black man was walking with his mother in Baltimore after helping her carry groceries when officers jumped from vehicles with assault rifles drawn, pointed the weapons at his head and back, and forced him into handcuffs.
His mother immediately told them they had the wrong person.
“This is my son. He has never been in trouble,” she said as officers surrounded him. “He just graduated high school last year.”
What followed was a mother trying to protect her son while armed officers treated him as a suspect before establishing that they had the right person. She demanded to know why he was being arrested, what warrant they were relying on, and whether anyone had checked his identification.
“Why you going to point an assault rifle at that man like that?” a witness bystander said.
The encounter unfolded near Monument Street and Luzerne Avenue after the two had left a Save A Lot. Her son had been carrying grocery bags for her when officers almost killed him.
As he remained in handcuffs, his mother demanded proof that police had the correct person. She asked officers to show her the photograph of the man they were looking for and repeatedly requested badge numbers, names, paperwork, and information about where her son was being taken.
Her questions went largely unanswered in the moment.
For this mother, “mistaken identity” was not a minor procedural error. It meant watching armed officers restrain her son on a Baltimore street and forcing her to argue in real time that the young man beside her was not the person they wanted.

That history matters because her son was the one forced to carry the immediate danger when police got the identity wrong.
“They jumped out with assault rifles and just snatched a young boy off the street walking with his mother,” she said.
Accountability cannot end with acknowledging that officers had the wrong person. Baltimore City and Baltimore County police must explain what information led officers to target this 20-year-old, what officers knew before they approached him, and what safeguards failed before the encounter escalated.
His mother was left demanding answers while her son carried the physical danger of a police mistake. The agencies involved owe this family the full record of how that happened, who authorized the operation, and who will be held accountable for putting a young Black man at gunpoint.
